Families with dogs and children
Family Dynamics
Dog and child dynamics can be a source of frustration for many parents.  I am here to support and prepare you at each phase of your journey.  I will teach you successful strategies that are positive and practical for all family members.  This will ensure a safe and harmonious relationship for your baby, toddler, child and dog.

77% OF DOG BITES COME FROM THE FAMILY DOG OR A FRIEND’S DOG.

Every dog has the propensity to bite, even yours!  Dog bites are almost completely avoidable with education and knowledge.  If you have children and dogs in the same home you must learn about child-dog safety.  Knowledge brings confidence and reduces stress.

I can help you no matter which stage your family is in ~ pregnant or adopting, newborn baby, toddler or young kids.

Transitioning from Pet Parent, to Parents with Pets
Family life with dogs is a joy, but can be challenging too.  A new baby in the home changes everything—including your dog’s whole world.  I know that your dog is a special part of your family.  I also know how chaotic life can be with a new baby and pets all under the same roof.  I am here to help you!

Whether you’re expecting or adopting your first child, or you have a houseful of kids already, you can get help solving the challenges of family life with a dog.  I can help you transition from pet-parent to baby-parent.

How do I know if I need help?  Complete this checklist

  • Does your dog listen to you well, always on the first command?  Or do you have to repeat commands a few times before they do it?
  • Does your dog listen to voice only commands?  Or do you have to use hand signals too?
  • Is your dog nervous or timid in general?
  • Is your dog scared of loud noises?
  • Is your dog scared of new people, objects or environments?
  • Does your dog like to be touched?
  • Does your dog growl at other people or dogs when they have a prized toy or food?
  • Is your dog afraid of children?
  • Does your dog growl at other people when they approach you?

If you checked off any of the above behaviors PLEASE contact me right away.  The sooner you start preparing your dog for your baby’s arrival the easier the transition will be.  Once the baby is here you will be tired and won’t have the energy needed to change long standing behaviors.

Newborns, Babies & Dogs
Do you have a new baby in the house and it's not going quite as well as you imagined?  Many new parents "bring home the blanket" and think they have done all they need to do while many dogs need more guidance and support.  Their world has turned upside down and they are confused.  If your dog is showing any signs of discomfort or stress please don't wait another day.
Schedule a private session and we can review safety measures, management tips and start training to get you back on the road to peace and harmony.

Toddlers & Dogs
Toddlers are a whole new experience for your dog.  Just when they thought they had the baby figured out, the baby starts to move!  If your baby has entered the rocking, crawling, or walking stage your have now entered into the most difficult phase in dog and child dynamics.
Your baby is exploring everything and if you are not careful that includes the dog's ears, tail and fur.
It can be particularly strenuous on the child-dog relationship.  It takes a watchful parent to create safety for both their child and their dog.  You need to ensure that the relationship developing between your child and the dog is one of mutual respect and harmony.

I will help you learn how to
  • Handle your child's curiosity about the dog
  • Set up safe zones for both your dog and child
  • Read dog body language so you see the signs of early stress to keep your child safe.
Young Children & Puppies
Many families wait until their children are past the toddler stage before getting a family dog thinking that because the kids are older it will be so much easier.  They are often surprised to find out that they will still have challenges juggling young kids and a dog.  While puppies are cute, they have sharp teeth and it's easy for your child to become scared of the new puppy.  I will help you navigate your puppy's developmental stages while teaching your children appropriate interactions with dogs.  It is important that they learn how to act around ALL dogs and not just their puppy if you want them to be truly safe around dogs.  If you haven't gotten a your puppy yet schedule a phone consultation so I can help you with breed selection.  This ensures that you get a puppy that will fit with your lifestyle and is the best choice for life with kids.

I will help you learn how to
  • Handle your child's reaction to normal puppy behaviors like puppy biting
  • Teach your children games to play that support training your puppy instead of teaching bad habits
  • Teach your children how to interact safely with dogs
  • Teach you how to raise a family friendly dog
