It's never too early to start training your puppy! My puppy classes are designed to build the foundation necessary towards forming a healthy and happy relationship between you and your companion dog. Your puppy comes to you instinctively equipped to live by a particular set of rules respected by all dogs. Unfortunately, those rules aren’t the same as yours; your puppy not only doesn’t know the first thing about living in a human home, your puppy doesn’t know human language. “No” and “bad dog” don’t teach him anything because he doesn’t know what you’re saying or more importantly what you want. I offer two styles of classes. Traditional classes where your puppy is on leash and play time is limited, as well as off leash classes where your puppy learns to listen even in a group of puppies. Classes are six weeks long, 50 minutes each week for a cost of $25 per class, so $125 for the entire five week package. Off Leash Puppy 1- "Socialization and a whole lot more!" This class specifically focus on teaching bite inhibition (gentle jaws), socialization with other dogs and people, calming and handling, attention, beginning obedience and the prevention of behavior and temperament problems. Special emphasis is paid to handling by strangers so your dog learns to be calm while being handled by other people, not just their owners. We start teaching the puppies impulse control, recall, and attention to handler with distrations in the room. This class is taught entirely off-leash which is how you live your life-off leash. This class lays the foundation for your dog to thoroughly enjoy the company of people and other dogs. Early puppy temperament training is crucial for a companion dog and teaching puppies basic manners early lays the foundation for long-term success. Class is limited to 8 puppies. Off leash Puppy 2- "Let's get to work." This class is designed to take your well socialized puppy and teach them the skills they need to live happily with us. We learn settle, walking on a leash politely, polite greeting with people and dogs, quiet, come when I call and more. All of this is done on and off leash with distractions. Class is limited to 8 puppies.
Traditional Puppy Class This class is designed for puppies who, for whatever reason, are unable to attend my off leash puppy classes. There is still opportunity for socialization with the other puppies but the majority of the class is taught on leash. This class is also good choice for handler’s who are limited in their physical capabilities and are unable to chase after their puppy. This class focuses on the basics that all puppies need to learn. In this class you puppies will learn attention to handler, sit, down, touch, come, settle, and handling by strangers. Class is limited to 8 puppies. Adolescent Angst – "My dog is driving me crazy!" Prerequisite: Off Leash Puppy 1, Traditional Puppy or equivalent Did you wake up recently and realize that your cute little puppy is no longer little? And their behavior is no longer cute? Do you find yourself yelling “NO!” more than anything else? Do you need some help? The adolescent stage can be a difficult one which is why most dogs you see in shelters are adolescent dogs. This class is specifically to help you get through the initial stages with your “teenager”! This class is for friendly non-aggressive dogs. Class is limited to 6 dogs. 5 week class, 50 minutes each week for $125

FAQ’s about vaccines When can I start puppy classes, aren’t vaccines needed? A. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior states… “ The primary and most important time for puppy socialization is the first three months of life. During this time puppies should be exposed to as many new people, animals, stimuli and environments as can be achieved safely and without causing overstimulation manifested as excessive fear, withdrawal or avoidance behavior. For this reason, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior believes that it should be the standard of care for puppies to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated. Because the first three months are the period when sociability outweighs fear, this is the primary window of opportunity for puppies to adapt to new people, animals, and experiences. Incomplete or improper socialization during this important time can increase the risk of behavioral problems later in life including fear, avoidance, and/or aggression. Behavioral problems are the greatest threat to the owner-dog bond. In fact, behavioral problems are the number one cause of relinquishment to shelters. Behavioral issues, not infectious diseases, are the number one cause of death for dogs under three years of age.” You may read the entire position statement by clicking the link below. Q. What vaccines are required for classes? A. I believe that the controversy surrounding over vaccinating our dogs is legitimate and that vaccination schedules are a personal decision and need to be determined by each pet’s guardian and veterinarian. I do require proof that you see your veterinarian annually for check-ups and are currently in good health.
